Our licensing model adopts the concept of value-based pricing, initiated by Dinamo in 2020. This means a larger company, organisation or institution pays more for licensing a typeface than a smaller one. And in this scenario, the company is the client, who hires a designer.
The value of a typeface is dependent on the size of the company that licenses it, measured by the number of its employees. This single metric simply determines the price for every media, no more guessing how many computers or page views: you only need to know one number.
The license owner is the client. The client is the person or company commissioning the design work and therefore acquiring the usage rights of the font for their design. The commissioned designer or design agency is not the license owner.
Via our trial fonts, we permit the commissioned designer or design agency to download full test fonts of our available typefaces free of charge, including the presentation, proposal, or pitch of a project to the client. Get our trial fonts here.
When the choice of typeface is approved by the client, the fonts can be purchased either by the client or by the designer in the name of the client. In both cases, the license owner and the company size entered in the check-out process is relevant to the client, not the designer. Hence, the designer doesn’t pay for a typeface when working for a client.
Considering the relationship between the client and the designer, a font license can be extended for third party sharing with subcontractors or other third parties involved in the project. A third party is anyone not employed by the license owner, for example: freelancers, PR agencies, producers, developers, printers, etc.
We offer discounts when ordering specific font bundles or the entire family of a typeface. Also, to encourage the use of variable fonts, we offer a further discount on the price of our variable fonts, which include all instances of a typeface in one single file.
Next to designing bespoke typefaces and logos, we also offer to alter, customise and adapt our retail typefaces (incl. updates on language support; adding desired symbols, icons, glyphs, etc. to the character set; expanding weights and styles; modifying open-type features). Get in touch for a quote.
To support independent culture, we offer a 25% discount on the fonts licensed for and by registered non-profit organisations or publicly-funded, non-commercial cultural institutions (i.e. charity, library, municipal gallery, etc.). Please follow the checkout process accordingly.
A discounted license for students is available, please write us an email. This license covers any sort of school projects, including assignments, self-initiated projects, or design commissioned by the school (open days, graduation shows, lectures, events, etc.). Students can also use the licensed typefaces on their personal websites and social media.
A font license is a legal agreement that lets you use a typeface under specific conditions. Purchasing a license ensures that type designers are compensated for their work and that you’re using the fonts appropriately.
Licensing for HAL Typefaces follows the model introduced by Dinamo in 2020. In essence, this value-based model attempts to measure the value a typeface is generating for its user. A larger company, agency or institution with more reach and bigger revenue will logically generate more value with a project, ad, campaign, etc. than a smaller one. Simultaneously, it’s a more fairly distributed pricing model from bottom to top, enabling smaller companies, individuals and studios to afford good fonts.
We use one single, simple metric for measuring the relevant company size: the number of employees working for the company. You can find more information about our licensing system in our EULA (see below).
Basically, the value of a typeface is dependent on the size of the company that licenses it, measured by the number of its employees. This disregards previous metrics of font pricing such as the number of computers, website visitors or app downloads. Acquiring this data could be tedious and these numbers are often inaccurate and inconsistent. By removing all of these various metrics and focusing only on company size of the license owner, font licensing and pricing has become easier and more straightforward.
The license is always issued to the end user. So if you are the hired designer or design agency, the license owner is the client. This is the person or organisation commissioning the design work and acquiring the usage rights of the font for their company. The license owner is not the commissioned designer or design agency. Hence, it’s not about who’s using the font, but about who is generating value with the font. Therefore, the price of the licenses varies depending on the size of the client/company.
Our licenses are issued to the end user of the font. Hence, a new, valid license is acquired for every new client that the font is used for.
Yes, you can purchase the license on your client’s behalf. The license is then registered under your client’s name as the end user. You can include their details during the checkout process.
You can also add the relevant fonts to your cart and share it with your client, who can easily recreate the same cart via the generated link you sent. Generating PDF quotes is also possible in the cart’s checkout process. We encourage designers to let their clients purchase licenses, because they are the ones using the font for their goods and benefiting from the font for their purpose.
The client always owns the license and the designer is then automatically covered by this license. Please be aware, that as the designer you’re only permitted to use the font for that specific client.
Sometimes it’s difficult to accurately define the number of employees. Maybe your team or your client’s company is constantly changing in size or it’s segmented into different teams or divisions with separate budgets. If you’re unsure, just get in touch. We’ll help you choose the right tier and make necessary adjustments if needed.
It depends. Some things can be considered, others are not possible. Please send us an email and we are happy to see what can be done to reach a sensible agreement.
We offer several license types depending on how you intend to use the fonts:
• Desktop/Print
• Web
• App/Game

If your usage expands beyond the original license terms — for example, the company size has sufficiently grown, you’re launching a new website, or building an additional app — then yes, an upgrade is required. You can upgrade at any time by contacting us or acquiring additional, appropriate licenses on our website.
If the license owner wishes to share font files with subcontractors or other third parties involved in the project, the license can be extended for third party sharing in the checkout process. A third party is anyone not employed by the license owner, for example: freelancers, external designers, design agencies, PR agencies, producers, developers, printers, etc. This excludes the client, hence a client does not qualify as a third party.
Our licenses are generally perpetual and remains valid for as long as the owner wishes to use it. However, please note that licenses are non-transferable and cannot be passed on or assigned to a new owner.
If you or your client are not profitable yet, please contact us via email. We will try to find an individual pricing solution to make our fonts affordable.
A discounted license for verified students is available, please inquire via email. We use the payment processor Stripe, a software infrastructure that enables individuals and businesses to send and receive payments via the Internet. Since Stripe handles the payments, we don’t know the precise reason why a particular card is declined. We suggest you contact your bank and solve the problem with them if this issue persists.
If your payment doesn’t go through, try again using a different browser, refreshing the page or emptying your browser’s cache. If the problem persists, please contact us. We can help process the order manually or issue a custom invoice.

If a font is defective, notify us within 30 days of purchase and we will provide a suitable replacement.

End User License Agreement (EULA)
HAL Typefaces
Helmstraße 4, Seitenflügel, 10827 Berlin, Germany
Licensing for HAL Typefaces follows the company-size, value-based model. Put simply, the price of a font depends entirely on the size of the company using it, measured by their total number of employees. It’s not about who’s using the font, but about who is generating value with the font. Therefore, the price of the licenses varies depending on the company size of the client (license owner).
• The Client is the License Owner: The license belongs to the company commissioning the work (the client)—not the freelance designer or design agency creating it.
• Company Size Rules: The price is based on the total number of people working for the client company. Metrics such as website traffic, app downloads, or the number of computers the font is installed on are irrelevant.
If a designer is hired by a company to create a brand identity and proposes a font by HAL Typefaces:
• The Company is the client and the License Owner. The price is based on their company size (number of total employees).
• The Designer is a sub-contractor.
• If the company also hires a PR Agency to use the font, that agency is an additional sub-contractor.
• In short:
The Client = License Owner
The Designer ≠ License Owner
Every font license automatically allows the font to be shared with one sub-contractor (such as an external designer, developer, or producer) to work on behalf of the license owner. The client does not qualify as a third party. If more than one external partner requires access to the font, a Sub-Contractor Extension must be added at the time of purchase.
If a designer uses a HAL typeface for multiple clients, each of those clients must purchase their own separate license.
HAL Typefaces offers the following license types. For custom setups, an Unlimited License can be arranged via email, which bundles all formats for a one-time fee with no company size limits.
• Desktop/Print: Covers the installation of the font on designated devices to create printed and digital designs (documents, merchandise, signage, portfolios, and ePubs) for one company.
• Web: Allows the use of the font on one web domain with unlimited traffic. A separate web license is required for additional domains. This covers .woff and .woff2 files only—not desktop formats like .otf.
• App/Game: For embedding the font files into one digital product (a mobile app, desktop app, or game). Multiple apps or games require multiple licenses.
• Video/Broadcast/Streaming: For using the font in moving images (clips, reels, movies, ads) for one company.
• Social Media: For creating design assets for one company’s social media channels (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc.). Note: For social-media-only videos, either a Video or a Social Media license may be used.
• Logo/Wordmark: With a logo/wordmark license the fonts can be used to create a logo or wordmark for one brand. To do this for another brand requires the purchase of another license. The font can be converted to outlines in design software and those outlines can be edited to design a logo.
Trial fonts have Unlicensed in the file name. They are 100% free to download and use for testing, prototyping, pitching, and presenting concepts to clients. But they cannot be used in any final, published or commercial work.
Because font files are digital software, all sales are final. Refunds cannot be offered for incorrect license purchases. If a font file is defective, please email HAL Typefaces within 30 days of purchase and a replacement will be provided.
Downloading, installing, or using a HAL typeface constitutes automatic agreement to these terms. Once full payment is received, HAL Typefaces grants the license owner a perpetual (forever), worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the fonts for the purposes allowed in this agreement. HAL Typefaces retains full ownership of the font software and the type design. Any rights not explicitly granted in this contract are reserved.
To ensure fair and safe usage, the following actions are restricted:
• Using the fonts in a political context without written permission from HAL Typefaces.
• Using the fonts to promote violence or discrimination.
• Converting the fonts into different file formats.
• Modifying, reverse-engineering, decompiling, or disassembling the font files.
• Creating new, derivative fonts based on these designs.
• Renaming the font files in a way that violates anyone else’s rights.
• Embedding the fonts in a way that allows end-users to extract or download them.
• Sharing the fonts with unlicensed third parties (unless a sub-contractor extension is added).
• Distributing or reselling the fonts or giving the fonts to anyone without a copy of this contract.
• Placing the fonts on public servers or public repositories (like GitHub).
• Using the fonts, or the designs inside them, to train Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Using the fonts to spread hate, violence, racism, or discrimination is strictly prohibited. Violating this rule will result in the immediate termination of the license without warning or financial compensation.
If the license owner violates any part of this contract, all usage rights end automatically and the usage of the fonts must stop immediately. In the event of legal repercussions, the license owner is responsible for all resulting costs, including legal and investigation fees.
The license owner is responsible for any local or withholding taxes that apply in their country. These will not be deducted from the licensing prices.
HAL Typefaces builds fonts using modern technology and tests them thoroughly, but the software is provided on an “as-is” basis. There is no guarantee that the fonts will work perfectly on legacy systems or with experimental, cutting-edge software. Neither party will be liable for indirect or consequential damages. In any dispute, the maximum financial liability of HAL Typefaces will never exceed a refund of the license fees paid.
This document contains the entire agreement, overriding any previous agreements, discussions, or purchase orders. It can only be modified if HAL Typefaces agrees in writing. If a court finds one part of this contract invalid, the remaining sections still stand. This contract is governed by German law. Any legal proceedings or disputes will take place exclusively in the courts of Berlin, Germany. The UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply. Nor do any conflict of law principles.
